The main reason a carpet shows signs of premature wear is because of improper maintenance. If major traffic lanes were vacuumed more frequently and spots and spills were cleaned properly, carpeting would look better and last longer.
Traffic lanes and patterns are usually caused by the following factors: traffic lane graying, soiling, matting and wear. We will review each problem, how it is caused and what can be done to prevent it.
Traffic Lane Graying
Carpets are known to eventually show signs of wear. This wear creates an illusion of soiling, which often causes frustration and misunderstanding between homeowners and carpet care experts. Even though a carpet had been cleaned, it doesn't mean that it will look the same all over. Wear often causes what is known as traffic lane graying, a condition that has been nicknamed, "ugly out."
There is not a lot that a carpet care expert can do with "ugly out." If a 10-year-old carpet is cleaned, you have a clean 10-year-old carpet. Just as a clean pair of old jeans will show wear and discoloration around the knees, a clean old carpet will show signs of wear in the traffic lanes.
Soiling
The main cause of traffic lane soiling is tracking in soil and dust; airborne pollutants; and food and beverages spilled on the carpet. Soil damages a carpet as well as making it look dirty. The main problem caused by soil is called fiber abrasion. Fiber abrasion is created by dirt particles scratching and scraping the fiber surface. Scratches and scrapes block light reflection causing theses areas to look even dirtier and gray. The easiest way to prevent soil from damaging the fiber is to vacuum regularly.

Initially, green cleaning products had a poor reputation among cleaners; they may have been better for the environment in some way, but they didn't work as well as "traditional" products. Green product certifiers are aware of this perception in the marketplace, so they include efficacy as a prerequisite to being certified... "it's not green if it doesn't work." It also shouldn't damage the carpet , so efficacy testing includes ph, color change and re-soiling testing.
Are you aware that bio-based and biodegradable means that a product will be broken down over time into its component pieces and not accumulate in waterways or landfills. Usually, bio-based products are biodegradable and biodegradable products are bio-based -- but not always. Host Dry Carpet Cleaner is both. Host's Green Seal approval includes biodegradability and our United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) BioPrefreferred certification includes bio-based testing. You can learn more about bio-based products by visiting their web site at biopreferred.gov.

There is a phenomenon in the carpet cleaning industry that could easily be called, "ring around the room," but is more commonly referred to as filtration soiling or soil filtration lines. What are soil filtration lines? Soil filtration lines are ugly dark lines usually from 1 to 3 inches in width that often show up in homes along the baseboards, under doors, along stairways around furnace vents and under floor length draperies.
The Cause
Filtration soiling is caused by soot, dust, carbon monoxide and other microscopic airborne pollutants that pass through the carpet pile. As the pollutants pass through the carpet, the fibers act as a filter to remove the fine particles of airborne soil. These lines build up in the carpet and slowly turn from light gray to black. These airborne particles are distributed throughout a building via the heating or air conditioning system or through natural convection currents in the building structure. In virtually every home and building, gaps are found at the lower edge of walls, between steps and the walls of a stair case and between the floor and the drywall. Soil filtration lines may take weeks, months or even years to appear.
Prevention
The best method of prevention is to develop a habit of vacuuming along baseboards and stairways weekly, using a crevice tool. Also, during the months of heaviest usage for your heating or air conditioning system, change the filters at least monthly.

Many people say they are waiting until after winter to clean their carpet. Let's look at a couple of the reasons given that make them come to that conclusion and why we don't think they should wait. It's a great time to clean your carpet.
"The carpet will get dirty right away." We agree. If you come in with wet muddy shoes on. But, how about taking your shoes off before you walk on the carpet? We could go into great detail explaining all the bad things that can be tracked onto your carpet, visible and invisible, winter or summer, but we dont' want to spoil your dinner. Then there are the cutting soils that can cause abrasion and cause those ugly traffic lanes in the areas you walk the most. So this is an excellent time to train yourself to take your shoes off because you can see all this stuff on your shoes that you don't want on the carpet.
One more thing to consider is that we are not as busy during winter so you can usually have the day and time that you want to have us clean your carpet and not have to wait for two or three weeks. We also have more time to do some extras that you didn't think about until we started cleaning, like your grouted tile floor that you didn't realize how dirty it was. And because we are inside more in the winter, having a clean carpet can give us a healthy home to enjoy. Removing the soil covering the fibers makes the colors brighter, it feels cushiony and it smells better. Sounds like what the doctor ordered to make you feel better on a dreary winter's day.

Utilizing the latest technology and PURE's tile cleaning agents, we can thoroughly clean your tile and grout with our tile and grout cleaning system. It will restore the natural beauty of your ceramic tile and grout quickly and economically and it will be dry and ready to walk on when we are finished. Your floors will sparkle once again and you save time and money. Call us for more information on this special service. 877-216-5509
